Canoes of the Marshall Islands

Wa Kuk Wa Jimor - Marshallese Canoes Today from Rachel Miller on Vimeo.

A fine one hour video about the importance of the canoe building tradition
in Marshallese society.  Marshallese canoes are among the very best designs
that exist in the Pacific.

I'm building a Greenland-qajaq right now, but it feels a bit strange as it's getting warmer here...

  6. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer on Lae and Maloelap Atols in the early 70's... the use of the Kurkur then was common and I was gifted with a model before I left Lae Atoll. It has survived 6 moves over an ocean and the contental United States... I just had a friend repair the model for me and it sits proudly in the Inn parlor here in Southside Virginia.
This video was a wonderful visit back....thanks so much.

  7. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer on Kaven, Maloelap from 1966 - 1968. Loved sailing in the tipnols on the occasions we visited other islets! Happy that the islands boat building tradition is being carried out in so many ways!
