Imagine that you are sailing your small single or double outrigger canoe On a broad reach on a windy day. The waves are getting bigger and your speed is becoming higher than the speed of the wave train. Now the wave picks up your stern and the ama to leeward punches into the back of the wave that you are overtaking. If the top of your ama is a vee or rounded shape, you will watch it rise again. If your ama has a flat deck forward of the crossbeam, you may have a problem in the right conditions. Most trimaran capsizes are in a diagonal direction caused by tripping over the dug in ama. The flat deck surface becomes a planing surface in a negative direction. The photos show some of the bow shapes to avoid this problem.
