Ulua from Ventura

It's sometimes hard to imagine, in the beginning, how a bundle of long fragile sticks can turn into something of such sublime beauty.

Keith Eldridge did an excellent job on his Ulua.

  2. Well done! What materials are you going to use for the 'iako and ama?

  3. Wow - I have slowed down on my build to try and "build in" some features BUT this just takes the cake.. Wow wow wow. Gary - I was in your neck of the woods this morning - thought to stop in and say hello but then remembered you are in Saipan - It was a rainy misty day... quite beautiful though!

  4. Thank you for the kind words. Gary's excellent plans and beautiful design made this project a pleasure. The iakos are laminated spruce and mahogany. I shaped the ama from blue styrofoam, (wish I had used surfboard foam). I glassed it this weekend and it's ready for pylons and finishing sanding. I'm looking for a polynesian style tribal design for the ama. Looking forward to splashing her!

  6. A guy with a big house on the beach wanted to buy her before she even went in the water, said he wanted to make her into a bench seat for his living room :( I put two extra layers of 6oz tape along the length of the keel and the clear coat is 2 part polyeurethane . If she gets too dinged up I will patch and paint. Besides, my granddaughter (4yrs) is more excited to go for a paddle than I am. What could be more rewarding than that:)

  8. Never been to Guam! would love to
go some day. Gary must have me confused with one of his many other builders.
P.S. Ventura is not too bad a place to call home :)

  9. Well done Keith, thats a beautiful canoe. Great to hear that your granddaughter is so keen to go out with you. I took my 4 yr old son out on my ulua on Sunday. Its a great age to get them started.

  10. Bas,
Your Ulua pictures are what inspired me to build. My Granddaughter loves the pictures of your kids in the canoe and looking at them has inspired me to get myself out to the garage and finish the ama.
