ITI for sale
New Zealand proa sailors may be interested
in ITI, a prototype 23 ft shunter
that has lived in the Whangarei harbor
for about 12 years.
Originally built to be used as a fishing
waka, and go trolling under sail on the Tutukaka coast, but changing
circumstances and the owners relocation brought about a change in those plans……moving
from the coast to the upper reaches of the Whangarei harbor made getting out to
sea much more difficult. So in order to spend the odd night aboard, a whare was
built to provide shelter and a lock-up place for gear.
Now, with older age starting to show in
wear and tare of joints,I need a waka better
suited to this condition, so am building a 30 footer.
ITI is in need of some maintenance but is
still able to do coastal sailing this summer if an enthusiast is willing to
take him over at a fair price…..offers near $3000 NZ make sense to me.
Modeled on the Micronesian type proa, there
are innovations to the running rigging system which allow ITI to be sailed
single handed.
The picture shows my paddleboard being
carried between the hulls, although a board or two can be lashed on the lee
side beams to function as a safety ama and prevent heeling beyond recovery
point.
Sail area is not big in the professionally
made North Sails Crab claw sail, but this rig can handle winds up to 30 knts….
A bigger sail with reef point would improve performance, if fun sailing rather
than fishing was the object.
