The Real Thing

Beautifully built dugout canoes are a rarity these days, but David Kunert is doing his bit to keep the art alive.  You can own one too.  See all the details at one of David's sites:

Takapu for Sale

Harmen Hielkema's 6.9M (22.6') shunting proa is for sale.  Like me, he has more canoes than he can now do justice to.  This sale consists of the main hull, ama, two asymmetric steering daggerboards, a boom and a yard.  More details at Harmen's site.

Everglades Challenge

Saturday, March 5 is the start of the annual  Everglades challenge, where kayaks, canoes and small boats race (or cruise) 300 miles from Tampa Bay, Florida to Key Largo.  My friend Wade Tarzia is entered in his "Short Dragon" (above) now equipped with two inflatable amas, making the whole canoe much more portable from Connecticut.
Bob Dalton has also entered his 24' Wa'apa equipped with a lug main and sprit mizzen.
